Jim's Story

Life Shari and Jennifer--if you read this please email us through classmates.com We'll figure out from there how to get you an address that is otherwise listed in the phone book for Flag Pond, TN. Love Jim and Feb I got married in 1987 to Febora (Feb). We have a son Shaun and a daughter Sherry Lynn. I retired from the Navy on October 7th, 2001, and started attending East Tennesse State University starting in January 2002. I graduated December 18, 2004 with a BS in Mass Communications (Radio/TV/Film Production) and an Appalachian Studies Minor on August 13, 2004. Went to EMT school and now work for Washington County/Johnson City EMS. I play mandolin for a group called Rockingham Road. We've been together for about 3-1/2 years and have a great time playing bluegrass, gospel and country. We usually play 3 or 4 shows per month. I'm also a Volunteer Fireman for Southside Fire Department and Rescue Squad in South Unicoi County, TN. It looks like I'll be the new training officer for the coming year. We live in Flag Pond, TN in the mountains and are 1/2 way between Johnson City TN and Asheville NC. Jim, Feb, Sherry Lynn School Well, mostly I remember having a great time being on the Track and Cross Country teams. Wish we could go back to those days. There was also the gang that ate lunch together on the hill outside of Mr. Collins' room. We had a good time there. College I started attending East Tennesse State University starting in January 2002 after retiring from the Navy. I graduated December 18, 2004 with a BS in Mass Communications (Radio/TV/Film Production) and an Appalachian Studies Minor on August 13, 2004. At ETSU, I became a mmber of AERho the National Broadcasting Society's Honor Society and ASL Honor Society for Non-Traditonal Students. I was also the charter president of the new student organization "Appalachian Traditional Music Association". After I left ETSU, I went to Northeast State Technical College in Blountville, TN (Fall 2005 and Spring 2006) for EMT school. I got my Tennessee EMT license summer of 06 and started working for Washington County/Johnson City EMS this past February. Workplace Well, I think my H.S. friends know I started out working at Bob's Big Boy, graduating to Night Shift Manager before I enlisted in the Navy as an Electronics Technician. I retired after 20 years 6 months and 20 days of Naval Service and am a full time student at Ea...Expand for more
st Tennessee State University. Also, I stay busy as a volunteer firefighter with Southside Fire Dept and Rescue Squad which covers south Unicoi County. Got a fire substation right next door to me with a BRAND NEW Engine. The first ever for the dept. WoooHoooo. Military I enlisted in the Navy March 18, 1981 and went to Boot Camp and BE&E school in San Diego. Leaving San Diego, I went to ET "A" School in Great Lakes followed by "C" school for Air Traffic Control maintenance in Millington, TN finally reaching Naval Air Station Bermuda in January 1983. I was in Bermuda for two years and made ET2 while I was there. I had a great time. There was a lot of good fishing and it's a great place to play golf (I wasn't a great golfer, still not a great golfer, but Bermuda is a great place to play). In January 1985, I was able to get assigned to Charleston, SC where my brother was stationed. I did 3-1/2 years at Mine Division 125 with a deployment to the Arabian Gulf in 1987 a week after I got married. I was promoted to ET1 at this command. Returned home after 3 months and in 1988 transferred to Fleet and Mine Warfare Training Center. Instructor duty was a lot of hard work. I had some medical issues that contributed and in 1992, I transferred to Norfolk, VA and was there until 1994 at several different commands. In May 1994, I transferred to Ingleside, Texas for a 3-1/2 year tour in Mine Warfare. This proved to be a big mistake as a whole, but it was my choice to go there, versus going to the USS John F. Kennedy which was in the yards in Philadelphia. I did get my Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist qualification though. Deployed to Japan and Korean as part of MCM Rotational Crew Alfa in 1995 and then to England and the Med on USS Devastator in 1997. I flew back from the Med to transfer to Instructor Duty at Naval Air Technical Training Center, Pensacola. We loved Pensacola and the big trouble for us was that there was no longer a carrier based there to transfer to. I qualified as a Master Training Specialist while here. My favorite collateral duty assignment was ATC Maintenance Training Division's Public Affairs Representative. I learned a lot about writing news articles. I completed my Instructor duty in 2000 and transferred to the Big "E"...USS Enterprise in Norfolk where I requalified as ESWS and also qualified for my EAWS. I retired from the Navy in October 2001 to east Tennessee.
